CYW 000 Our Route – NOT MINE

Yellowstone and Environs – Late Sept / Early Oct 2019

This trip was mostly about seeing Yellowstone.  But since that is such an incredibly long drive we threw in stops in Colorado along the way out, and various places in Wyoming on the way back.  And of course we caught the Grand Tetons too since they’re right next door to Yellowstone.

All these shots were taken by Ken with his Cannon D-SLR unless otherwise noted.  A – V notation means Virginia took it with her Polaroid Point-and-Shoot.  A – NOT MINE notation means it’s one filched from the internet but that Ken wanted to include for explanatory reasons.  A – P notation means Ken took it with Virginia’s Polaroid Point-and-Shoot.
We departed Derby KS on Monday September 23, 2019 headed for the Hampton Inn + Suites in Golden, CO.  That evening we took advantage of the lack of downtown traffic to scope out our next day’s adventure.  After that we went to the 16th Street Pedestrian Mall area for dinner.  We found fairly deserted, if somewhat scary, parking below some an office building then walked 16th Street for a bit before settling on the Rialto for dinner.  It was somewhat disappointing and pricey, but sitting outside and watching the passersby on a wonderful evening compensated somewhat.  After dinner we took the free shuttle up to nearly the end of 16th Street and caught a bicycle-rickshaw ride back down to near the car.  I guess you’ll just have to believe me on all of this since we left the camera in the hotel room.

CYW 001 Colorado Capitol Building

The next morning we ate our included in the room price breakfast at the hotel then retraced the route from our hotel in Golden to the state capital building in downtown Denver.

CYW 002 Clean Mountain Air

We got there before the first tour of the day at 10 AM.  We could tell it was going to be a delightful day, clear skies, but sunny and likely quite warm as well.

CYW 003 Bison and Native Americans

On the east lawn of the capitol building is this bronze statue of a Native American hunter examining his prey, a bison.  It is entitled "The Closing Era."  The statue represents the end of the traditional lifestyle of Native Americans in Colorado.  Surely this would become a recurring theme for the next 11 days.

CYW 004 Looking up into the Rotunda

While we were standing there waiting for our tour someone many floors above dropped a cane and nearly hit Ken on the head!

CYW 005 Colorado Rose Onyx

This Colorado Rose Onyx is a rare rose from of marble from a quarry near Beulah. CO.  Reportedly they used it all in this one building.

CYW 006 Polished Brass

There was a LOT of polished brass in the place, and a team whose only job is keeping it bright and shiny.
